Recently, while reorganizing the folders of the historical archive and the old workshop registers from our historical collaboration with Zenith in Le Locle, we were deeply struck by the nature of the documents.
We found no philosophical proclamations, but rather the pure and rigorous ethics of Swiss craftsmanship. Among the handwritten notes of technicians and master watchmakers like Xavier Theurillat and Michel Vermot between 1969 and 1974, mathematical diagrams, formulas on the lift angle of the escapement, and tolerance graphs emerge. There are intense discussions about the development of historical complications like the famous Top Second, where engineers analyzed whether the microscopic thickness of a component should be 0.07 mm or 0.05 mm to preserve the oscillation amplitude of the balance wheel and prevent the movement from stopping.
